Primary Maths Confidence: Powerful Ways to Help Children

Confidence and maths don’t always seem to go hand in hand.

Over the years, I’ve met countless children who happily tackle a tricky reading comprehension but freeze the moment they see a page of calculations. Some will quietly whisper, “I’m just not good at maths,” whilst others become anxious before we’ve even looked at the first question.

The interesting thing is that very few of these children actually lack mathematical ability.

More often than not, what they’re lacking is confidence.

Once children begin believing they “can’t do maths”, that belief can quickly become the biggest obstacle to their progress. Fortunately, confidence isn’t something children either have or don’t have. Like mathematical skills themselves, it can be developed with the right support, encouragement and experiences.

Why Maths Confidence Matters

Primary school is where children build the foundations for future mathematical learning.

Whether they’re learning number bonds, multiplication tables, fractions or problem-solving, every new concept builds on previous knowledge. When confidence is low, children often avoid taking risks, rush through questions or give up before they’ve really started.

I’ve found that many children who struggle in maths aren’t afraid of numbers themselves. They’re afraid of making mistakes.

That fear can become surprisingly powerful.

A child who worries about getting an answer wrong may stop volunteering answers in class, avoid challenging questions or rely heavily on adults for reassurance. Over time, this can create the impression that maths is simply “not their subject”, when in reality they’re capable of much more than they realise.

Celebrate Effort, Not Just Correct Answers

One of the most effective ways to build confidence is to praise effort rather than perfection.

Imagine two children tackling the same problem. One gets the correct answer immediately. The other makes several mistakes but perseveres until they finally understand the method.

Which child has learnt more?

Quite often, it’s the second.

Learning maths involves making mistakes. Every incorrect answer provides information about what a child understands and what still needs developing.

When children realise mistakes are a normal part of learning rather than something to fear, they become much more willing to have a go.

Simple comments such as:

  • “I really like how you kept trying.”
  • “You chose a good strategy.”
  • “Let’s work out together where it went wrong.”

can have a far greater impact than simply saying, “Well done.”

Make Maths Practical

Young children naturally learn through doing.

Abstract numbers on a worksheet can sometimes feel confusing, but place the same mathematical concept into a real-life situation and everything suddenly becomes much clearer.

Cooking together provides wonderful opportunities to explore measurement, fractions and weighing.

Shopping encourages children to estimate costs, compare prices and calculate change.

Building with bricks develops understanding of shape, patterns and spatial reasoning.

Even setting the table can become an opportunity to practise counting, multiplication and sharing equally.

When maths becomes part of everyday life, children begin to see that it has purpose beyond the classroom.

Build Confidence Through Small Successes

One of the biggest mistakes adults sometimes make is moving on too quickly.

Children need opportunities to experience success.

If every activity feels just beyond their current ability, confidence gradually begins to fade.

Instead, try to create a series of achievable challenges.

Perhaps today your child confidently adds two-digit numbers.

Tomorrow they might tackle three-digit numbers with support.

Next week they may begin solving simple word problems using the same skills.

These small successes gradually build into genuine mathematical confidence.

I’ve often seen children who initially describe themselves as “bad at maths” completely change their attitude after a few weeks of carefully structured learning. Nothing magical has happened. They’ve simply experienced enough success to start believing in themselves.

Keep Learning Enjoyable

One of my favourite ways to teach primary maths is through games.

Children often don’t realise how much mathematical thinking they’re doing when they’re enjoying themselves.

Card games encourage number recognition and quick mental calculations.

Board games develop counting, strategy and logical thinking.

Dice games build fluency with addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Even simple treasure hunts can involve measuring distances, following coordinates or solving mathematical clues.

When learning feels fun, children become much more willing to tackle new challenges.

This is particularly true for many neurodivergent learners, including children with ADHD, dyscalculia and autism, who often respond brilliantly to interactive, engaging activities rather than repetitive worksheets. Creating enjoyable learning experiences has always been central to my approach because motivation and confidence often grow together.

Encourage Mathematical Talk

Sometimes children know far more than they realise.

Instead of immediately asking for the answer, ask questions such as:

  • “How did you work that out?”
  • “Can you explain your thinking?”
  • “Is there another way to solve it?”
  • “How do you know your answer makes sense?”

Talking through mathematical thinking helps children organise their ideas whilst giving adults valuable insight into any misconceptions.

It also reinforces an important message:

Maths isn’t just about getting the right answer.

It’s about understanding.

Every Child Learns Differently

As someone who has worked with many children with ADHD, dyscalculia, dyslexia and autism, I’ve learnt that no two learners approach maths in exactly the same way.

Some children benefit from visual models.

Others need practical resources they can physically move.

Some need learning broken into smaller chunks, whilst others thrive when mathematical concepts are linked to their favourite interests.

The key is flexibility.

Rather than expecting every child to learn through one method, we should adapt our teaching to suit the learner sitting in front of us. This personalised, strengths-based approach is something I’ve found particularly valuable when supporting children with additional learning needs.

Confidence Lasts Longer Than Correct Answers

One thing I often remind parents is that confidence isn’t built in a single lesson.

It develops gradually through hundreds of positive learning experiences.

Each encouraging conversation.

Each problem solved.

Each moment when a child says, “I did it!”

Those moments matter far more than many people realise.

After all, children who believe they can succeed are far more likely to persevere when learning becomes challenging.

And that resilience will support them long after they’ve forgotten how to calculate fractions or complete long multiplication.

    Home education can be an incredibly rewarding way of learning.

    It can give children the freedom to explore subjects in greater depth, learn at their own pace and spend more time developing the things they are genuinely interested in. For some families, it provides an opportunity to create an education that fits around the child rather than expecting the child to fit into a traditional school environment.

    But I also know that home education can leave parents with plenty of questions.

    Are we covering enough?

    Is my child making the progress they should be?

    How do I make sure they develop the English and maths skills they need?

    What happens if they have additional learning needs?

    And perhaps one of the biggest questions of all: how do I make learning work for my particular child?

    Having supported home-educated children for many years, these are questions I understand very well. I have worked with learners studying a wide variety of subjects and following the British Curriculum, as well as children following other educational programmes around the world.

    And one thing I have learnt repeatedly is that there is no single way to make home education work.

    The child has to come first.

    Home education doesn’t have to look like school

    One of the things I love most about working with home-educated students is the freedom.

    Learning doesn’t necessarily have to mean sitting at a desk completing worksheet after worksheet. In fact, some children become far more engaged when we take an idea from their own interests and use it as a starting point for learning.

    A child who loves animals might explore descriptive writing through an imaginary wildlife documentary.

    A student fascinated by football might develop mathematical skills through statistics, averages, percentages and graphs.

    A child interested in history might discover that their passion provides a wonderful starting point for reading comprehension, vocabulary, research and extended writing.

    Someone who loves gaming might develop problem-solving and logical thinking through mathematics, while also using their interests as inspiration for creative writing.

    The curriculum still matters. Children need to develop important knowledge and skills. But the route we take to get there can be much more flexible.

    Over the years, I have found that when children are genuinely interested in what they are learning, they often become far more willing to tackle the things they previously found difficult.

    That is particularly important when supporting children with SEND.

    My experience supporting SEND learners

    SEND is a particularly important part of my work.

    For more than fourteen years, I have supported children and young people with a wide range of educational needs, abilities and learning styles. My experience includes working with learners with ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia and autism, as well as children experiencing executive functioning difficulties, low confidence and anxiety around learning.

    I am very proud to describe myself as a SEND-experienced tutor.

    This isn’t simply because I have experience working with children who have additional needs. It is because understanding the individual learner is at the heart of the way I teach.

    I am also neurodivergent myself.

    I wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD until I was 31, and looking back at my own education, I can now see many things very differently. I loved learning and was academically capable, but there were aspects of education which were much harder for me than they appeared from the outside.

    My own experience has made me particularly aware of how easily children can be misunderstood.

    ADHD does not look the same in every person. Dyslexia does not affect every learner in exactly the same way. Autistic children are not all going to benefit from identical approaches. And a child with dyscalculia may have a completely different experience of mathematics from another child.

    There is no single “SEND learner”.

    My own ADHD journey taught me that very clearly. As I have written previously, my ADHD is not your ADHD and your ADHD is not mine. We all experience neurodivergence differently.

    That philosophy is incredibly important in my tutoring.

    I don’t want to see a diagnosis and immediately decide how a child should be taught.

    I want to get to know the child.

    A teenager I have supported for many years

    One of the most rewarding parts of tutoring is seeing how a child develops over time.

    I have been tutoring one particular teenager for a number of years, and it has been wonderful to watch her educational journey develop and change as she has grown.

    We are now working together on Functional Skills English and Functional Skills Maths, which is a very different stage from where we began.

    I think this is a lovely example of why personalised tuition can be so valuable.

    Education isn’t always about following a predetermined route simply because that is what everyone else is doing.

    Sometimes we need to step back and ask:

    What does this young person actually need now?

    For this student, Functional Skills provides an important opportunity to develop practical English and maths skills which are relevant to her future. Because I have worked with her for so long, I understand her strengths, the areas she finds more difficult and the approaches which help her engage.

    That relationship matters.

    Good tuition isn’t simply about knowing the curriculum.

    It is about knowing the learner.

    Building the British Curriculum around the child

    For families choosing home education, the British Curriculum can provide a useful framework.

    It gives parents some reassurance about the knowledge and skills children are expected to develop, particularly in core subjects such as English and mathematics.

    But a framework doesn’t have to become a cage.

    One child may need additional time to develop reading comprehension. Another may need to revisit mathematical concepts several times before they become secure.

    A dyslexic learner may benefit from multi-sensory approaches to reading, spelling and writing.

    A child with dyscalculia may need practical and visual ways of understanding number.

    An ADHD learner might benefit from shorter activities, movement, variety and clear structure.

    An autistic learner may need predictable routines and carefully considered communication.

    None of these things mean that a child is incapable of following the British Curriculum.

    They simply mean that they may need a different route through it.

    This is one of the greatest advantages of personalised home education.

    English and maths are about much more than worksheets

    English and maths are often the subjects parents feel most concerned about when they begin home educating.

    With English, we might work on reading, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, creative writing or communication.

    With maths, we might focus on number, calculation, reasoning, problem-solving, fractions, percentages or practical mathematics.

    But underneath all of this is confidence.

    I have seen children who are perfectly capable of learning begin to believe that they are “bad at English” or “just can’t do maths” because previous experiences have knocked their confidence.

    This can be particularly painful for children with SEND.

    A child who has spent years being told to concentrate harder, stop making careless mistakes or simply try harder can eventually start believing that they are the problem.

    They aren’t.

    Sometimes the teaching approach simply hasn’t matched the learner.

    Learning through interests

    One of the things I have particularly enjoyed over the years is using children’s interests to make learning engaging.

    I have supported a number of home-educated students, and no two have ever been exactly alike.

    Their interests become doorways into learning.

    A love of animals can lead into research and writing.

    An interest in space can become a wonderful opportunity for reading, vocabulary and scientific discussion.

    Sport can provide endless opportunities for maths.

    History can inspire creative writing.

    Art can support descriptive language.

    Even seemingly niche interests can become incredibly useful starting points for education.

    I don’t believe that every lesson needs to be entertaining every second. Children still need to experience challenge, practise skills and sometimes persevere with things they don’t immediately enjoy.

    But motivation matters.

    When a child understands why they are doing something and can connect it to something they already care about, learning can feel completely different.

    Home education can be particularly valuable for SEND learners

    For some families, home education provides something that traditional schooling simply hasn’t been able to offer: time.

    Time to slow down.

    Time to revisit something.

    Time to ask another question.

    Time to approach a concept differently.

    Time to celebrate progress without constantly comparing a child with thirty other children in the same classroom.

    This can be particularly valuable for neurodivergent learners.

    Children with ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia and autism can sometimes spend an enormous amount of energy navigating environments that weren’t designed with their needs in mind.

    Home education doesn’t automatically solve every difficulty, of course. Parents can still find themselves exhausted, uncertain or unsure about how best to support their child’s learning.

    That is where specialist tuition can become a useful part of the wider home education picture.

    The tutor doesn’t replace the parent.

    Instead, they can provide subject expertise, structure, encouragement and a different perspective.

    Looking towards September

    As September approaches, I know many home-educating families will be thinking carefully about the year ahead.

    For some children, that may mean continuing with the British Curriculum.

    For others, it may mean strengthening English and maths, preparing for Functional Skills, developing confidence or creating a more consistent learning routine.

    For children with SEND, finding the right support can be particularly important.

    Perhaps your child has struggled with school and needs an education that feels calmer and more individual.

    Perhaps they are academically capable but have lost confidence.

    Perhaps they have ADHD and need learning to be more flexible and engaging.

    Perhaps dyslexia has made reading and writing exhausting.

    Perhaps maths has become a source of anxiety because of dyscalculia.

    Or perhaps your child is simply wonderfully individual and you want their education to reflect that.

    Whatever the reason, I believe home education should give children the opportunity to learn in a way that recognises who they are.

    Not every child needs the same timetable.

    Not every child needs the same resources.

    And not every child will make progress in exactly the same way.

    What they do need is someone who understands learning, understands SEND and is prepared to meet them where they are.

    Personalised tuition that grows with the child

    For me, that is what personalised tuition is really about.

    It isn’t about taking a child and trying to squeeze them into a pre-existing programme.

    It is about looking at the learner in front of me and asking:

    Where are they now?

    Where would they like to go?

    And what will help them get there?

    After many years of supporting home-educated learners, I have seen just how powerful this approach can be.

    Sometimes progress is a qualification.

    Sometimes it is finally understanding a mathematical concept that has caused difficulty for years.

    Sometimes it is writing a paragraph independently.

    Sometimes it is reading aloud without that familiar feeling of dread.

    And sometimes it is simply a child finishing a lesson and saying:

    “That wasn’t as difficult as I thought.”

    Those moments matter enormously.

  • Supporting Dyslexic Learners at Home

    When a child is diagnosed with dyslexia, many parents experience a mixture of emotions.

    For some, there is relief. Finally, there is an explanation for why reading, spelling or writing has felt so much harder than expected. For others, there is worry.

    How can I help my child?
    Will they ever become a confident reader?
    What should we be doing at home?

    The good news is that dyslexic children can absolutely thrive.

    Over the years, I have worked with many learners with dyslexia and one thing has become incredibly clear to me: the most effective support rarely looks like endless worksheets and repetitive drills. In fact, some of the best learning happens when children are actively involved, using their hands, their imagination and their creativity.

    Many dyslexic learners are naturally curious, creative and highly capable thinkers. However, because reading and spelling can require so much effort, they can sometimes begin to doubt their abilities. This is why praise is so important.

    I cannot overstate the power of helping a child recognise their own progress.

    When a child has spent years feeling as though they are falling behind, celebrating small successes can make a remarkable difference. Sometimes learning confidence grows in tiny increments, like drops of water filling a bucket. One correctly-spelled word. One successful reading activity. One moment when a child suddenly realises, “Actually, I can do this.”

    These moments matter.

    At Bedford Tutor, our Diamond Spelling & Reading Programme was designed with this philosophy in mind. Rather than expecting children to memorise endless lists of spellings, we help them understand how words actually work.

    One area we focus on heavily is syllables.

    Many struggling readers see long words as giant mountains standing in their path. However, when children learn to break words into syllables, those mountains often become a series of smaller hills. Suddenly, words which once looked overwhelming begin to feel much more manageable.

    We also spend a great deal of time exploring vowel sounds.

    English spelling can sometimes feel wonderfully logical and completely chaotic at exactly the same time. As children begin to understand how vowel sounds influence spelling patterns, many start to recognise that there are actually reasons behind many spellings. Whilst English certainly has its fair share of exceptions, understanding common spelling rules helps children approach unfamiliar words with greater confidence.

    Most importantly, we make learning physical.

    Many dyslexic learners benefit enormously from seeing, hearing, saying and physically manipulating words.

    This is why we regularly use play dough, wooden blocks, magnetic letters and other hands-on resources to build words physically. Rather than simply looking at a word on a page, children can hold it, move it, change it and explore how it works. Learning becomes something tangible rather than something abstract.

    I often find that once a child can physically construct a word, they begin to understand it in a completely different way.

    Creativity also plays a huge role in our sessions.

    One of my favourite approaches involves turning words into pictures.

    For example, if we are exploring the word “what”, we might notice that it contains the word “hat”. Suddenly, we can draw a hat directly onto the letters. The word becomes more memorable because it is no longer just a collection of symbols. It becomes an image, a story and an idea.

    Dyslexic learners are often wonderfully visual thinkers and these creative associations can help words stick in the memory far more effectively than simple repetition.

    Over the years, I have seen children transform their confidence through approaches like these. Not because they suddenly become perfect spellers overnight, but because they begin to understand that reading and spelling are skills they can learn.

    Supporting a dyslexic learner at home is not about creating a second school environment. It is about nurturing confidence, celebrating effort and helping children discover strategies which work for their unique brains.

    After all, dyslexia is not a lack of intelligence. Some of the most creative, innovative and inspiring people throughout history have been dyslexic. Sometimes children simply need the right tools, the right encouragement and someone who believes in them long before they learn to believe in themselves.

    When we combine understanding, creativity and plenty of praise, remarkable things can happen.

  • Building Strong Number Sense: Powerful Primary Maths Strategies

    When parents ask me what the most important part of primary maths is, my answer is almost always the same: number sense.

    Before children can confidently tackle fractions, algebra or problem solving, they need to develop a deep understanding of numbers themselves. Just as we wouldn’t expect a child to build a house without solid foundations, we shouldn’t expect them to master more complex mathematics until they truly understand the basics.

    Over the years, I’ve found that children make their greatest progress when we slow down, build confidence and make sure those mathematical foundations are secure before moving on.

    What Is Number Sense?

    Number sense is far more than simply being able to count or memorise times tables.

    It is a child’s intuitive understanding of how numbers work and how they relate to one another. Children with strong number sense can estimate, recognise patterns, spot relationships and approach problems flexibly rather than relying on memorised procedures.

    For example, instead of seeing 8 + 7 as a calculation to memorise, a child with good number sense might think:

    “I know 8 needs 2 to make 10, so I’ll take 2 from the 7. That makes 10 + 5 = 15.”

    That kind of thinking demonstrates genuine mathematical understanding rather than simple recall.

    Moving from Concrete to Visual to Abstract

    One of the principles I use throughout my primary maths tuition is moving from concrete, to visual, and finally to abstract learning.

    This progression allows children to build understanding gradually rather than expecting them to work with abstract numbers before they’re ready.

    Concrete Learning

    Children first explore mathematical ideas using real objects they can touch and move.

    These might include:

    • Counters
    • Cubes
    • Numicon
    • Bead strings
    • Base ten equipment
    • Dice
    • Coins
    • Dominoes

    Physically manipulating objects helps children see what addition, subtraction, multiplication and division actually mean.

    Instead of simply hearing that 4 + 3 = 7, they can build it, move it around and discover it for themselves.

    Visual Learning

    Once children understand a concept using physical resources, we gradually introduce visual representations.

    This might include:

    • Number lines
    • Bar models
    • Arrays
    • Ten frames
    • Part-whole models
    • Number bonds

    The concrete objects slowly become pictures and diagrams, allowing children to visualise mathematics without needing physical equipment every time.

    Abstract Learning

    Only when those foundations are secure do we move towards abstract calculations using numbers and symbols alone.

    By this stage, the maths isn’t simply something they’ve memorised.

    It’s something they genuinely understand.

    Most importantly, we move through these stages at the child’s pace, not according to a timetable.

    Some children are ready to move quickly.

    Others benefit enormously from spending longer exploring concrete resources.

    There is no prize for rushing.

    Strong foundations almost always save time later.

    Mastering the Four Core Operations

    Everything in primary maths grows from four essential operations:

    • Addition
    • Subtraction
    • Multiplication
    • Division

    These skills appear again and again throughout mathematics.

    Fractions rely on multiplication and division.

    Percentages rely on fractions.

    Algebra relies on secure number understanding.

    Problem solving depends upon all four.

    Rather than racing ahead into increasingly difficult topics, I focus on ensuring children become confident with these core operations first.

    When children truly understand them, many later topics become far less intimidating.

    Using Real-World Maths

    One question children ask surprisingly often is:

    “When am I ever going to use this?”

    It’s a fair question.

    That’s why I try to teach mathematics through situations children can relate to.

    We might calculate the cost of shopping, work out change in a café, divide slices of pizza, measure ingredients while baking or compare football scores and statistics.

    Suddenly maths becomes something useful rather than something that only exists inside exercise books.

    Children begin to realise they already use mathematics every single day.

    Learning Through Socratic Questioning

    One of my favourite teaching approaches is Socratic questioning.

    Rather than immediately showing children how to solve a problem, I ask carefully chosen questions which help them discover the solution themselves.

    Questions such as:

    “What do you notice?”

    “Can you think of another way?”

    “Why do you think that worked?”

    “Does your answer make sense?”

    These conversations encourage children to think mathematically rather than simply follow instructions.

    The confidence that comes from discovering an answer independently is often far more powerful than being shown the method from the beginning.

    Online Maths Can Still Be Practical

    Some parents worry that online maths lessons can’t be hands-on.

    Fortunately, that hasn’t been my experience.

    For a number of years, I’ve been supporting one primary maths student living in Saudi Arabia, alongside another wonderful student in Thailand. Although we meet online, our lessons remain highly interactive and practical.

    With just a few inexpensive resources at home, children can still manipulate objects, build numbers and explore mathematical ideas exactly as they would during face-to-face lessons.

    Simple resources such as counters, cubes, playing cards, dice, Numicon or even dried pasta can make an enormous difference.

    Children love being able to pick things up, move them around and physically demonstrate their thinking.

    Technology allows us to share screens, draw diagrams and play interactive games, whilst tactile resources provide the hands-on learning that many children still benefit from.

    It really can be the best of both worlds.

    Maths Should Feel Like Solving a Puzzle

    Perhaps the most important thing I try to achieve in every lesson is making maths enjoyable.

    Many children come to me believing they “aren’t maths people.”

    Very often, they simply haven’t been given enough time to build secure foundations.

    I encourage children to think of maths as a giant puzzle.

    Every question is simply another mystery waiting to be solved.

    Sometimes we solve it quickly.

    Sometimes we need to try several different strategies.

    Sometimes we make mistakes before finding the answer.

    That’s all part of learning.

    When children stop fearing mistakes and begin enjoying the challenge, something remarkable happens.

    Their confidence grows.

    Their curiosity increases.

    And mathematics becomes something they look forward to rather than something they dread.

    After all, children learn best when they’re having fun.

    Final Thoughts

    Strong number sense doesn’t develop overnight.

    It grows through curiosity, exploration, conversation and plenty of opportunities to play with numbers.

    By moving from concrete experiences to visual representations and finally to abstract thinking, children develop genuine mathematical understanding that lasts far beyond primary school.

    When we teach through real-world examples, encourage mathematical discussion using Socratic questioning, and make learning enjoyable, maths becomes much more than a school subject.

    It becomes an exciting puzzle waiting to be explored.

    Home education is a journey that looks different for every family.

    Over the years, I have worked with many home-educated learners across the UK and around the world, and one thing has become increasingly clear: there is no single “right” way to educate a child. What matters most is finding an approach that works for the individual learner.

    Some children thrive when learning follows a structured timetable. Others flourish when lessons are shaped around their interests, curiosity and natural pace of development. One of the greatest strengths of home education is the flexibility it offers families to create a learning experience that truly meets their child’s needs.

    Every Child Learns Differently

    One of my favourite things about supporting home-educated students is seeing how unique each learner really is.

    I have worked with children who can discuss complex scientific ideas for hours yet need additional support with writing. I have taught students who excel in mathematics but lack confidence when reading aloud. I have also supported many neurodivergent learners whose strengths and challenges don’t always fit neatly into traditional educational expectations.

    As someone with ADHD myself, I understand that learning differences can sometimes make education feel challenging. However, I also know that when children are given the right support and encouragement, those same differences can become incredible strengths.

    Home education allows parents to build learning around the child rather than expecting the child to fit into a predetermined system.

    Building Confidence in English

    For many home-educated learners, confidence is just as important as academic progress.

    English can feel overwhelming for children who struggle with reading, spelling or writing. This is particularly true for learners with dyslexia, ADHD or autism, who may have experienced frustration in previous educational settings.

    I often tell parents that reading confidence develops much like growing a plant. Progress can sometimes seem slow at first, but with consistent nurturing, encouragement and patience, remarkable growth begins to appear.

    One of the most effective ways to develop English skills is through genuine enjoyment. Children who discover books, stories and topics that genuinely interest them are often far more motivated to read. Whether it’s a book about dinosaurs, space, animals or computer games, enthusiasm is a powerful learning tool.

    Writing confidence also improves when children feel safe making mistakes. Some of the best creative writing I’ve seen has come from students who were encouraged to focus on expressing their ideas before worrying about perfect spelling and punctuation.

    Making Maths Less Intimidating

    Mathematics can sometimes create anxiety for both children and parents.

    I frequently meet learners who believe they are “bad at maths” when, in reality, they simply haven’t found an approach that works for them yet.

    Home education provides the opportunity to slow down when necessary and revisit concepts without the pressure of keeping pace with a large class. This can be particularly beneficial for learners with dyscalculia or those who need additional time to process mathematical ideas.

    I often use practical examples, games and visual resources to help children understand mathematical concepts. When maths becomes something children can see, touch and relate to everyday life, it often feels far less intimidating.

    One student I worked with struggled to understand fractions until we began using pizza slices and baking activities as part of our lessons. Suddenly, the abstract concept became something tangible and meaningful.

    Moments like these remind me that successful teaching is often about finding the explanation that clicks.

    Supporting Neurodivergent Home-Educated Learners

    Many families choose home education because traditional school environments have not fully met their child’s needs.

    For learners with ADHD, autism, dyslexia or dyscalculia, personalised education can be transformative.

    Some children benefit from movement breaks and highly interactive lessons. Others need information presented visually or broken into smaller, manageable chunks. Many simply need the freedom to learn at a pace that reduces anxiety and allows confidence to grow naturally.

    The beauty of home education is that these adaptations can become part of everyday learning rather than special exceptions.

    The Power of Personalised Learning

    One of the greatest advantages of home education is the opportunity to celebrate progress without comparison.

    Children develop at different rates, and learning is rarely a straight line. There will be periods of rapid progress and moments when things feel slower. Both are completely normal.

    When children feel understood, valued and supported, they become more willing to take risks, ask questions and persevere through challenges.

    That confidence often becomes the foundation for long-term success in both English and maths.

    After all, education isn’t simply about covering curriculum content. It’s about helping children develop the skills, knowledge and self-belief they need to thrive.

  • What Are GL Assessments? A Parent’s Guide for International School Families

    ​If you have a child attending an international school, there is a good chance you have heard the term “GL Assessment” mentioned at some point.

    Perhaps your child’s school uses GL tests to monitor progress. Maybe your child is preparing for entrance assessments at an international school. Or perhaps you’ve simply heard other parents talking about GL assessments and wondered what all the fuss is about.

    Over the years, I have worked with many children attending international schools and, more recently, I have been supporting a number of students who are preparing for their GL assessments. One thing I have quickly discovered is that the words “assessment” and “test” often cause far more anxiety in parents than they do in children!

    The reality is that GL assessments are simply designed to measure a child’s current attainment and identify areas of strength alongside areas that may require further development.

    What Exactly Are GL Assessments?

    GL Assessment is an organisation which produces a range of standardised tests used by schools throughout the UK and across the world.

    Many international schools use GL assessments because they provide useful information about a child’s progress in areas such as:

    • Reading
    • English
    • Mathematics
    • Verbal Reasoning
    • Non-Verbal Reasoning
    • Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation

    Schools can then use this information to identify strengths, monitor progress and ensure students are receiving the support they need.

    Although the assessments themselves vary depending on the school and age group, they are generally designed to assess skills children have developed over time rather than knowledge they have memorised the night before.

    Should Parents Be Worried About GL Assessments?

    In a word: no.

    As someone who has worked with many children preparing for these assessments, I have found that confidence is often far more important than cramming.

    Children tend to perform best when they feel relaxed, prepared and familiar with the types of questions they may encounter.

    Unfortunately, some children hear the word “test” and immediately imagine something frightening. Before they have even opened the paper, they are already worrying about whether they will get questions wrong.

    I completely understand this.

    When I was at school, I often worried about assessments despite genuinely enjoying learning. Looking back, I realise that confidence can have a surprisingly large impact on performance.

    How Can Parents Help?

    One of the best ways parents can help is by keeping learning positive.

    Children learn far more effectively when they are engaged and interested in what they are doing. This is particularly true for many neurodivergent learners, including children with ADHD, dyslexia and other learning differences.

    Currently, I am tutoring several students who are studying for their GL assessments and one thing I always try to do is make the learning process enjoyable.

    Rather than spending entire lessons completing practice papers, we often learn through games, challenges and interactive activities.

    For example, grammar and punctuation can sometimes feel dry and repetitive when taught through worksheets alone. However, when these same skills are practised through games, quizzes and creative challenges, children often become far more motivated to learn.

    Not only does this help them master new topics, but it also provides valuable opportunities to revisit and consolidate previously-learnt material.

    Learning should never feel like a punishment.

    In my experience, children make the greatest progress when they are having fun.

    What Skills Are Assessed?

    Although every assessment is slightly different, many GL tests focus on the core skills children use every day in school.

    Reading assessments may explore comprehension, vocabulary and inference skills.

    English assessments often include grammar, punctuation and spelling.

    Mathematics assessments typically focus on reasoning, problem-solving and mathematical understanding.

    Some schools also use verbal and non-verbal reasoning assessments, which look at how children identify patterns, solve problems and think logically.

    The good news is that these are all skills which develop gradually over time.

    Preparing Without Pressure

    One of the biggest misconceptions about GL assessments is that preparation needs to be intense.

    In reality, steady and consistent practice is often far more effective.

    Reading regularly, discussing new vocabulary, developing mathematical fluency and building confidence with grammar and punctuation can all make a significant difference.

    Most importantly, children need to understand that an assessment is simply a snapshot of where they are at a particular moment in time.

    It does not define their intelligence, their potential or their future success.

    Final Thoughts

    Having worked with children from a variety of international schools, I have seen first-hand how common GL assessments have become across the international education sector.

    Whilst the assessments themselves are important, I believe confidence, curiosity and a positive attitude towards learning remain far more valuable in the long term.

    When children feel supported, engaged and motivated, they are much more likely to achieve their potential both inside and outside the assessment room.

    After all, the goal is not simply to achieve a high score on a test.

    The goal is to help children become confident, capable learners who enjoy the process of learning itself.

  • Helping SEND Learners Thrive in International Schools

    Moving to a new country is an exciting adventure for many families. Children have opportunities to experience different cultures, make friends from around the world and learn in diverse educational environments.

    Alongside these opportunities, however, international schooling can present unique challenges, particularly for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

    Over the years, I have worked with many families living overseas, supporting children attending international schools in countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Although every school is different, one thing has become very clear to me: SEND learners thrive when they feel understood.

    As someone with ADHD myself, I also know how important that understanding can be. No two neurodivergent children are exactly alike. Two children with the same diagnosis may learn in completely different ways, have different strengths and need entirely different types of support.

    That is something I wish more people understood.

    Every Child’s Journey Is Different

    When parents first contact me, they often begin by explaining their child’s diagnosis.

    “My daughter has dyslexia.”

    “My son has ADHD.”

    “Our child is autistic.”

    These labels can be helpful because they provide a starting point for understanding a learner’s needs. However, they never tell the whole story.

    Some children with ADHD are constantly on the move, whilst others appear quiet and dreamy. Some autistic learners love routine and predictability, whilst others enjoy variety and creativity. Children with dyslexia may struggle with reading but excel in problem-solving, storytelling or art.

    Rather than asking, “What diagnosis does this child have?” I prefer to ask, “How does this particular child learn best?”

    That question changes everything.

    International Schools Offer Wonderful Opportunities

    One of the things I particularly enjoy about working with international school students is the incredible diversity they experience every day.

    Many children grow up alongside classmates from dozens of different countries, learning about languages, traditions and cultures that broaden their understanding of the world.

    International schools are often wonderfully inclusive environments, and many provide excellent SEND provision. However, children can still experience challenges.

    Some learners are adjusting to a new language.

    Others have moved countries several times.

    Some are adapting to an unfamiliar curriculum or assessment system whilst also trying to make new friends.

    For SEND learners, these changes can sometimes feel overwhelming.

    Building Confidence Comes First

    Parents often ask me whether we should focus on catching up academically.

    Whilst developing English and maths skills is important, confidence almost always comes first.


    A child who believes they are capable is far more willing to attempt challenging tasks, ask questions and persevere when things become difficult.

    I often think back to my own experiences at school. Looking back now, I can see that the teachers who made the greatest difference weren’t necessarily the ones with the fanciest resources or longest explanations.

    They were the teachers who made me feel capable.

    Sometimes a few encouraging words can stay with a child for years.

    Personalised Learning Makes a Huge Difference

    One of the greatest advantages of one-to-one tuition is flexibility.


    Rather than expecting a child to fit a particular teaching method, lessons can be adapted around the learner.

    For one student, this might mean using visual resources.

    For another, movement breaks and interactive games help maintain concentration.

    Some learners benefit from breaking tasks into smaller chunks, whilst others need extra time to process new information before responding.

    When children feel that lessons have been designed with them in mind, learning often becomes far more enjoyable.


    Working Together Creates Success

    One thing I particularly value when supporting international families is communication.

    Parents know their child better than anyone else.

    Teachers understand the classroom environment.

    Tutors can provide personalised strategies and additional support.

    When everyone shares ideas and works together, children receive consistent encouragement wherever they are learning.

    I’ve often seen remarkable progress when families, schools and tutors become a team rather than working separately.

    Looking Beyond the Diagnosis

    Perhaps the biggest lesson my own ADHD diagnosis taught me is that labels should never limit expectations.

    Children with SEND are not defined by the challenges they experience.

    They are artists, scientists, mathematicians, storytellers, inventors, musicians and future innovators.

    Sometimes they simply need teaching that recognises their strengths as well as their difficulties.

    Whether a child attends an international school in Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok or Riyadh, they deserve to feel understood, respected and confident in their own abilities.

    When we focus on understanding the individual rather than the diagnosis, remarkable things can happen.
